10 Things You Cannot Miss in Bali

Bali, with its lush landscapes, vibrant culture, and enchanting beaches, beckons travelers from across the globe. As you plan your Bali adventure, make sure to include these 10 unmissable experiences that capture the essence of this tropical paradise. We personally used GetYourGuide to book most of our excursions but you can also arrange some things with your hotel or driver. So let’s dive into the 10 things you cannot miss in Bali!

1. Ubud: The Cultural Capital

Ubud is known as Bali's cultural heart. Immerse yourself in traditional dances, visit ancient temples, and explore local art markets. It is centrally located which makes it a great home base to visit the rest of the island. Ubud is a haven for those seeking a blend of spirituality, culture, and relaxation. Indulge in affordable massages at Gratia Spa and take advantage of the delicious restaurants and cafes like LazyCats. Take care of yourself by practicing yoga at The Yoga Barn. While Ubud is a tourist haven, it is not to be missed. To read a complete guide to Ubud click here.

2. Surfing

Head to Uluwatu for world-class surf breaks and breathtaking ocean views. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or a beginner catching your first wave, Uluwatu's beaches offer an unforgettable surfing experience. You can book your surfing lesson here. Canggu is also a popular surfing spot.

3. Trip to Nusa Penida Island:

Discover the raw beauty of Nusa Penida, an island paradise just a short boat ride from Bali. Marvel at stunning cliffs, pristine beaches, and the famous Kelingking Beach with its dinosaur-shaped rock formation. Nusa Penida has some of the most incredible ocean views and beautiful, and often times hard to reach, beaches. While you can take a day trip here from Bali, we recommend you stay for a few days and explore the island. Be sure to stop at Orion Bakery for the most delicious coffee and freshly made pastries.

4. Mt. Batur:

Conquer the active volcano, Mount Batur, on a sunrise hike. Mount Batur, an iconic volcanic peak in Bali, offers a thrilling adventure and stunning natural beauty for visitors to experience. Rising 1,717 meters (5,633 feet) above sea level, Mount Batur presents a moderate trek suitable for adventurers of various skill levels. Witness the spectacular sunrise over the caldera and Lake Batur, creating a breathtaking panorama that rewards your early morning ascent. Not into hiking at 4am? Then book a jeep tour! We actually took this tour and it was incredible to watch the sunrise over Mt. Batur. Your driver will also bring you hot coffee and a small breakfast to enjoy as you watch the sunrise.

5. Silver Making Class in Sideman:

Engage in a hands-on silver making class in Sideman, known for its stunning landscapes and traditional crafts. Create your own silver jewelry under the guidance of skilled artisans, a unique and memorable experience. This was one of the most fun things we did in the 2 months we spent in Bali. We also recommend staying a couple nights in Sideman. It is less touristy but there is still enough to see and do. Rent a motorbike and ride around the rice terraces, get a massage and indulge in the local cuisine. Stay at a local homestay for a truly authentic experience.

6. Rice Terraces:

Bali's rice terraces are a mesmerizing testament to the island's agricultural heritage and natural beauty. Among the most popular terraces are Tegalalang in Ubud and Jatiluwih in Tabanan, each offering a captivating glimpse into traditional farming practices and breathtaking panoramas. Tegalalang's terraces cascade down the slopes, creating picturesque vistas that have become iconic on social media, especially with the famous swings overlooking the lush greenery, perfect for Instagram-worthy photos. Meanwhile, Jatiluwih boasts expansive terraces framed by towering mountains, offering a serene escape into Bali's rural heartland. You can also stay amongst the rice terraces in Ubud!

7. Beach Clubs:

Indulge in the glamorous beach clubs of Uluwatu, where sophisticated lounges meet the stunning Indian Ocean backdrop. Enjoy sunset cocktails, live music, and a luxurious beachfront experience. Some of the most popular beach clubs in Uluwatu are Potato Head, Ulu Cliffhouse, Savaya and Karma Beach. Canggu is also home to one of the most famous beach clubs in Bali, Finns.

8. Waterfalls

Embark on a day of adventure by chasing waterfalls in Bali's lush jungles. Bali boasts an array of enchanting waterfalls, each offering a refreshing escape. Among the island's most popular cascades is Tegenungan Waterfall, nestled amidst lush greenery near Ubud. Its powerful flow and serene surroundings make it a favorite spot for swimming and photography. Sekumpul Waterfall, located in North Bali, enchants visitors with its stunning multi-tiered cascades framed by dense jungle foliage, accessible via a scenic trek. Gitgit Waterfall, situated in the highlands of Bedugul, captivates with its picturesque setting and cool, crystal-clear pools ideal for a rejuvenating dip. Nungnung Waterfall, hidden away in the Gianyar regency, offers a tranquil retreat amid pristine nature, reached by descending hundreds of steps through verdant forest. Lastly, the majestic Aling-Aling Waterfall in Buleleng regency fascinates adventurers with its twin streams and natural rock slides, inviting thrill-seekers to plunge into its invigorating pools. Hire a driver for the day for under $30 and combine your waterfall adventure with a coffee plantation tour to discover the secrets of Balinese coffee production and savor freshly brewed avocado coffee. PRO TIP: Be sure to get to the waterfalls as early as possible to avoid the crowds. Be sure to bring your swimsuit and a change of clothes to be comfortable, a large water bottle, sunscreen, and bug spray.

9. Tirta Gangga Water Palace:

Explore the mesmerizing Tirta Gangga Water Palace, a royal retreat with stunning pools, fountains, and lush gardens. This historical site offers a serene escape, allowing you to revel in Bali's architectural and natural beauty. You can also purchase fish food to feed the fish (some of the biggest fish we have ever seen!). This is an instagram hotspot so be sure to get there early to avoid the crowds.

10. Balinese Food

Balinese food is all about bold flavors and spices that make your taste buds dance! Imagine crispy Babi Guling, that famous roasted suckling pig packed with delicious herbs and spices. Or how about Ayam Betutu, where tender chicken is cooked low and slow in banana leaves with a mix of fragrant seasonings? Then there’s Nasi Goreng, their yummy fried rice tossed with sweet soy sauce and served with your choice of meat or veggies. And don’t forget Satay—those grilled skewers dripping with peanut sauce are just irresistible! Try dining at places called “Warungs”, there you will find traditional Balinese food. Be sure to read recent reviews before you pick a Warung to visit.

Bali's allure lies in its diverse offerings, from cultural escapades in Ubud to thrilling adventures in Uluwatu. Each experience is a piece of the island's vibrant tapestry, ensuring your visit to Bali is nothing short of extraordinary. So, pack your bags and get ready for a tropical paradise that promises a symphony of sights, sounds, and unforgettable moments. Bali awaits!
