Packing for Europe: Long-Term Traveler's Guide
Preparing for a long-term journey through Europe requires careful consideration and strategic packing. In this comprehensive guide, we'll cover everything you need to know about packing efficiently for your adventure, from choosing the right luggage to selecting essential items for different seasons and climates.
How to pack for Europe
Carry-On Luggage:
Choosing to bring a carry-on bag instead of checked luggage offers multiple benefits for travelers. Not only does it save you money by avoiding checked bag fees, but it also streamlines your travel experience by eliminating the need to wait at baggage claim and reducing the risk of lost or mishandled luggage. Plus, keeping your belongings with you at all times provides added convenience and peace of mind throughout your journey. Overall, opting for a carry-on bag enhances both the financial and logistical aspects of travel, making it a preferred choice for savvy travelers seeking a hassle-free experience.
Opt for a durable carry-on suitcase with wheels and a hard shell to protect your items.
Consider how much your suitcase weighs- we’ve see some popular brands that weigh 13lbs which cuts into the weight limit.
Brands like Away and Monos are very popular and, in our humble opinion, worth it. That being said, Lemon still travels with a backpack while I’m toting around a white hardshell suitcase I bought in Japan for $60.
Place your heaviest items toward the bottom of the bag (towards the wheels) and lighter items at the top. Squeeze more delicate items between the packing cubes.
Cover your shoes with shower caps to keep them from transferring dirt into your bag.
Packing Cubes:
Compression packing cubes are A MUST to organize and compress clothing, maximizing space and facilitating easy access to your belongings.
Organize them items or outfits to save time (This will pay off!)
Tripped travel gear offers the absolute BEST compression packing cubes on the market. We’ve been using them for years and they are still as sturdy as ever!
Personal Item Bag:
When packing your personal item bag for travel in Europe, prioritize essentials such as travel-sized liquids within a clear, quart-sized bag for airport security, along with any necessary medications. Ensure you have your travel documents, including passport, boarding passes, and itinerary, easily accessible. Don't forget to pack a portable power bank to keep your devices charged, noise-canceling headphones for a comfortable journey, and an extra pair of underwear (an even an extra outfit) for emergencies. Stay hydrated with a refillable water bottle, and consider including snacks to keep you fueled during your adventures. I’ve been using this bag from Nordace for the last 2 years and it is still going strong!
European Style
Incorporating elements of European fashion into your travel wardrobe is easily achievable by investing in classic staple pieces that exude refinement and versatility. Consider incorporating essentials such as tailored blazers, crisp button-down shirts, well-fitted dark-washed denim, and neutral colored pieces. These timeless pieces not only elevate your ensemble but also seamlessly transition from day to night, allowing you to effortlessly blend in with the chic ambiance of European cities. By integrating classic staples into your travel wardrobe, you'll embody the essence of European style while maintaining comfort and practicality throughout your journey. While wearing athleisure is common in the US (and comfortable) you won’t find Europeans wearing them anywhere but the gym.
As a HUGE legging fan, I am bringing 2 pairs with me and plan to elevate them by pairing them with a stylish black shoe, classic grey sweater and long classic coat.
The secret to packing for Europe
The key to successful long-term travel packing in Europe lies in selecting essential clothing items that offer versatility across various climates and can be paired together. Our recommendation? Focus solely on packing weather-specific items for the initial leg of your journey. Once the season shifts, you can easily donate or sell any items that no longer suit your needs and replace them with more affordable alternatives found at stores like H&M, C&A, and Primark. Repeat this process as the seasons change, ensuring your wardrobe remains practical, adaptable, and stylish throughout your European adventure.
Staple Pieces
Pack items that can be worn across seasons such as linen, classic denim, and shirts that can be layered.
Include versatile pieces such as dark washed denim, neutral tops, and a classy sweater for effortless mix-and-match outfits.
Tailor your wardrobe to the season, adding layers for cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer travels.
A raincoat and umbrella are essential as it can rain any time of year in Europe.
Essentials by Season
Spring: It will still be cool, especially at night, in most places in Europe. Bring light layers such as cardigans, sweaters and a lightweight coat/jacket that can be taken off if it warms up during the day.
Summer: It can get HOT in Europe in the summer and a lot of places don’t have air conditioning. Be sure to bring or add in linen and cotton pieces that breathe. Lightweight skirts, dresses, linen shorts/pants are all good suggestions. A sun hat, beach coverup and sandals should be added.
Fall: As it starts to cool down, you can add in pieces like a warm scarf, heavier jacket and hat. Layers will be key in creating maximum comfort. Boots or closed-toe shoes for walking on damp streets. Jeans or trousers and long-sleeve tops and light sweaters for layering.
Winter: A heavy coat or parka should be added in to withstand cold temperatures. Depending on where you’re traveling in Europe you might need insulated gloves, a hat, and scarf for warmth. You can add in thermal layers such as long-sleeve tops and leggings under your jeans/trousers. Waterproof boots or shoes suitable for snow and slush- we recommend these. Additionally, thick socks to keep feet warm and earmuffs or a beanie for added warmth.
Remember- You don’t need to pack EVERYTHING on the list above, but it is a general list. Activities can also alter this list as you may need hiking boots or adventure appropriate clothing.
Toiletries
A lot of these items can be purchased while traveling in Europe, but if you have some favorites be sure to bring them with you. These should all be travel sized/compact items.
Shampoo & Conditioner
Face Care: Face wash, serums, moisturizer, eye creme, sunscreen
Toothbrush, toothpaste and floss
Travel sized razor
Body soap
Body lotion
Nail care: Polish, clipper, nail file
Makeup: This is highly personal preference but we recommend you only bring the essentials you use like foundation, powder, blush, mascara.
Hair brush, hair ties, bobby pins etc.
Styling tools: Consider purchasing styling tools such as hairdryers or flat irons upon arrival in Europe, as the voltage differs from the US. This ensures compatibility with local electrical outlets and avoids potential damage to your devices.
Accessories
All of the items below you can purchase while you’re in Europe and make for great souveniers but if you have some favorite accessories don’t be afraid to bring them with you.
Scarves are a versatile accessory that can add warmth, style, and color to any outfit while providing protection from chilly weather.
Statement Jewelry: A few carefully chosen pieces like necklaces, earrings, or bracelets can effortlessly transform your look from day to night.
Crossbody Bag: Opt for a functional yet stylish crossbody bag to keep your essentials secure while exploring European cities.
Sunglasses: Essential for shielding your eyes from the sun's glare while adding a touch of sophistication to your ensemble.
Travel-Friendly Hat: Pack a foldable or crushable hat to shield yourself from the sun or rain while exploring outdoor attractions.
Watch: For obvious reasons but we recommend to keep it simple as to not draw too much attention to yourself. Leave your valuables at home.
Electronics
Preparing for long-term travel in Europe necessitates careful consideration of electronic essentials to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. From staying connected to capturing memories and staying entertained, having the right gadgets can enhance your experience. Here's a breakdown of essential electronics for your European adventure:
Noise-canceling headphones: Perfect for blocking out ambient noise during travel or finding moments of tranquility amidst bustling city streets.
Travel adapter: Vital for adapting your plugs to European outlets, we recommend this one.
Power banks and charging cords: Keep your devices powered up on the go, essential for long days of exploration. We recommend this lightweight slim option from Anker.
Hair styling tools: Consider purchasing locally to avoid voltage compatibility issues and lighten your load.
Compact camera: Capture the beauty and essence of your European journey with high-quality photos and videos. Alternatively, if you have a newer Iphone, a camera may not be necessary.
Lightweight laptop: Ideal for work, entertainment, and staying organized during extended travel.
Portable Speaker: We NEVER travel without this JBL Clip Portable Bluetooth Speaker. It’s water resistant, clips to your bag and affordable.
Ereader/tablet: Perfect for downloading books or movies, especially when you’re somewhere with a spotty wifi connection.
Cell phone: We go into detail about phone coverage below.
With these electronics in your arsenal, you'll be well-equipped to navigate and enjoy the diverse landscapes and cultures of Europe.
Cell Phone
When it comes to phone coverage in Europe, you have various options to stay connected efficiently. While obtaining a local SIM card is the traditional approach, for those journeying swiftly through multiple countries, an eSIM can be a game-changer. An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a virtual SIM card that's embedded within your device, allowing you to switch between different mobile networks without needing a physical SIM card. However, it's essential to ensure your phone is unlocked to use an eSIM and to check compatibility with your carrier.

For digital nomads or those requiring consistent internet access for work, portable Wi-Fi options provide a reliable solution. Portable Wi-Fi hotspots, also known as pocket Wi-Fi or Mi-Fi devices, offer a dedicated internet connection that can be shared among multiple devices. These devices are especially handy for remote work or extended travel, ensuring a stable connection regardless of location.
Safety
Ensuring your safety while traveling in Europe is paramount, and having the right products and strategies can provide peace of mind throughout your journey. Consider investing in luggage locks to secure your belongings while on the move, and a portable door alarm adds an extra layer of security to your accommodation. Opting for a crossbody bag helps deter pickpockets, keeping your valuables close and secure.
Additionally, staying informed and aware of your surroundings is crucial. Familiarize yourself with the locations of local embassies or consulates for assistance in case of emergencies. Avoid disclosing personal information, such as your accommodation details or travel itinerary, to strangers, and remain vigilant in crowded areas. Utilize secure transportation options, and be cautious when using ATMs or exchanging money. Finally, trust your instincts and err on the side of caution when navigating unfamiliar environments. With these precautions and essential safety products, you can enjoy your European adventure with confidence and peace of mind.
Healthcare
Healthcare in Europe is renowned for its accessibility and affordability, particularly in comparison to the United States. You can find comfort in knowing that quality medical care is readily available across the continent at a fraction of the cost. In addition to the peace of mind provided by Europe's healthcare system, it's wise for you to have supplemental insurance coverage for unforeseen medical expenses.
