Imagine stepping off a cruise ship onto the picturesque port of Alicante, with only eight hours to soak in the sights and sounds of this enchanting destination. That was precisely our situation during a recent port day on a 12-day cruise. After encountering technical issues that forced us to miss our previous port of Gibraltar, anticipation surged as we eagerly awaited our chance to explore Alicante's treasures. With time ticking away, we embarked on a whirlwind adventure, determined to unearth the best that Alicante had to offer so we could share our discoveries with fellow travelers.

Top Things to Do:

1. Playa del Postiguet:

Kick off your Alicante escapade with a visit to Playa del Postiguet, a stunning urban beach nestled against the backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea. Sink your toes into the golden sands, bask in the warm sunshine, or take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters. With its vibrant atmosphere and scenic views, this beach is the perfect spot to unwind and embrace the laid-back Mediterranean lifestyle.

2. Museo The Ocean Race:

For a fascinating glimpse into the world of sailing and maritime history, head to Museo The Ocean Race. Explore interactive exhibits, multimedia displays, and a vast collection of sailing memorabilia that chronicle the prestigious history of this renowned yacht race. Whether you're a sailing enthusiast or simply curious about the sea, this museum offers a captivating experience for all ages.

PRO TIP- This museum is free but for 5 euros you can take a ride in a sailing simulator to see what it’s like to be on board! We thought it was well worth the money.

3. Mercat Central d'Alacant:

Immerse yourself in Alicante's culinary scene at Mercat Central d'Alacant, a bustling indoor market brimming with fresh produce, local delicacies, and artisanal goods. Stroll through the vibrant stalls, sample authentic Spanish treats, and engage with friendly vendors as you discover the flavors of Alicante. From aromatic spices to mouthwatering seafood, this market is a feast for the senses. Head to Aitana’s Corner Bar for tapas. Enjoy cured ham sliced right in front of you, bubbly Cava (Spanish sparkling wine) and red Vermouth served with an olive and lemon garnish. Find a seat and ask for a menu, both in Spanish and English, and order as many of these little dishes as your heart desires. We recommend the plata de jamon, albondigas and any of the smaller sandwiches.

4. Santa Barbara Castle:

Perched atop Mount Benacantil, Santa Barbara Castle stands as a majestic symbol of Alicante's rich heritage and enduring resilience. Ascend to the castle's lofty heights via a scenic lift or winding footpath, where panoramic views of the city and sea await. Explore the castle's ancient ramparts, archaeological museum, and lush gardens as you uncover centuries of history and legend.

PRO TIP- There can be LONG lines for the lift up to the castle which costs 3 Euros. Make sure this is the first thing you do in Alicante to ensure you have enough time to see everything else.

5. Barrio de Santa Cruz:

Step back in time as you wander through the charming streets of Barrio de Santa Cruz, Alicante's historic old town. Admire the picturesque whitewashed houses adorned with colorful flowers, meander along narrow cobblestone alleys, and soak up the enchanting ambiance of this ancient neighborhood. Don't forget to stop at one of the local cafes like Hermandad de la Santa Cruz for a coffee or a cerveza for under 6 Euros.

6. Basilica of St. Mary:

Discover a masterpiece of Gothic architecture at the Basilica of St. Mary, a revered religious landmark in the heart of Alicante. Marvel at the ornate facade, intricate stone carvings, and soaring bell tower that dominate the city skyline. Step inside to admire the awe-inspiring interior adorned with exquisite stained glass windows, ornamental altars, and sacred relics.

Step into a whimsical wonderland along San Francisco Street, transformed in 2013 to revitalize the area during economic decline. Wander through the vibrant district adorned with yellow brick roads, toadstool houses, and larger than life mushrooms. Explore eclectic shops, cozy cafes, and artisanal boutiques, each offering a unique glimpse into Alicante's creative spirit. San Francisco Street promises a delightful journey filled with wonder and enchantment.
